Information

Autism is a lifelong developmental disorder which affects the way a person communicates and relates to people around them. Children and adults are unable to relate to others in a meaningful way. Sufferers are resistant to change in routine causing difficulty in cognitive processes such as imagination. It is believed to be a condition caused by organic brain damage and affects over 500,000 families in the U.K.

Asperger Syndrome shares many of the, same characteristics as autism but usually there are fewer problems with language - often speaking fluently, though words can sound formal or stilted. People with Asperger Syndrome do not have the accompanying learning difficulties associated with autism, in fact they often have average or above average IQ. Asperger Syndrome sufferers try hard to be sociable but find it difficult to understand non-verbal signals. Is there a cure? At present - No! but the earlier a diagnosis is made the better the chances are of a person receiving appropriate help and support.

Autism is specific to the individual but has commonly grouped behaviours. The condition has a wide ranging degree of severity hence the description 'Autistic Spectrum'. All those affected have a triad of impairments which affects:

• Social interaction

• Social communication

In addition, repetitive behaviour patterns are a notable feature as in resistance to change in routine.
